Aluminum Foil Aluminum foil wrap, pie plates, roasting pans Wash clean Keep separate from aluminum cans. No plastic-coated aluminum. Place in the scrap metal container.
ALL Cans: Steel and Aluminum Food and beverage cans Rinse. Okay to leave the paper labels. No mineral spirits, gasoline or other solvent cans.

Communication Devices Cell phones, chargers, cell phone batteries, MP3 players, Digital cameras, GPS units, iPods and laptops. Bring unbroken phones, MP3 players, cameras, GPS units, iPods and laptops as well as associated chargers and batteries. No cordless home phones. No monitors or any other electronic devices.

Clothing - used In good, clean condition: clothing, shoes, coats, etc. Place in closed plastic bags (no boxes). In conjunction with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs Fluorescent Light Bulbs with screw-in base Bring directly to Recycling Center staff or volunteers. Tube fluorescent bulbs must be taken to a household hazardous waste facility. Call 816-784-2080 (MO) or 913-715-6900 (KS) for an appointment.
ALL Corrugated Cardboard Flat-finish corrugated cardboard boxes, paper grocery bags Flatten boxes. Clean and fold paper bags. Remove excessive tape/staples
ALL Glass Bottles and Jars Food and beverage bottles and jars Please rinse. All colors welcome, no need to separate by color. Remove lids, metal neck rings and foil. No dishes of any kind including wine glasses, plates, Pyrex, etc. No flower vases, light bulbs or flat panes of glass. No opaque colored glass. Set honey/canning jars aside at the center for reuse. Metal lids, foil, etc. go with scrap metal.

Household Batteries Rechargeable only Place corroded batteries in sealed bag. No lead acid, alkaline or car batteries.

Household Items - small In good working condition: kitchenware, houseware, toys, sporting goods, linens, etc. Clean and in working order, pack in boxes or bags. Take care with breakables. In conjunction with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City
ALL Magazines Shiny-paged magazines, catalogs and coupons   No mixed paper publications such as TV Guide, phone books or Readers Digest (see paperboard).
ALL Newspaper Newspaper, newsprint, sale ads and coupons Place in paper grocery bag No plastic bags, string, twine or plastic banding.
ALL Office Paper Copier paper, stationary, receipts, file folders, envelopes (non-manila), letters, brochures, cards

OK to leave staples.
Shredded paper is also acceptable.

Remove spirals, rubber bands and paper clips. No carbon paper.

Packing Materials Packing peanuts, foam wrap, bubble wrap Secure in a closed plastic bag (no boxes). Materials available for free to recycling center patrons. See staff for information.
ALL Paperboard Shiny corrugated boxes, non-corrugated boxes (soft-drink, cereal, gift boxes), paper towel rolls, manila envelopes, phone books, catalogs over 1/2" thick, TV Guide and other mixed-paper publications Clean and flatten. Remove plastic windows, handles, non-paper over wraps and liners. No tissue paper, waxed products, milk or orange juice cartons.
ALL Phone Books White and yellow pages   Place with paperboard.

#1 bottles and jars such as soda, water and vinegar bottles

#2 bottles, jars and tubs such as laundry detergent bottles, milk judgs, HDPE margarine and yogurt containers

#5 food containers such as syrup and ketchup bottles and yogurt tubs

#6 rigid, transparent polystyrene food containers such as clear deli containers (NOT Styrofoam™ food containers)

All food containers should be clean and free of food residue.

We DO NOT accept:

  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic toys
  • PVC pipe
  • Plastic sheet material, (shower curtains, drop clothes, table clothes, etc.)
  • Sandwich bags, medical tubing, pill bottles, Styrofoam cups, and plastic forks
  • Motor oil bottles
  • Pesticide and/or herbicide bottles
  • Miscellaneous automotive product bottles (brake fluid, transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, etc.)

Please NEVER RINSE motor oil, pesisticide, herbicide or other automotive product bottles. (Just one gallon of motor oil can pollute up to one million gallons of water.)

ALL
Scrap Metal Chain link fence, chicken wire, sheet metal, aluminum window frames, bike frames, bike parts, garden tools, nuts, bolts, screws, nails, metal office furniture, springs, electrical wire, bottle caps, etc. Leave plastic casing on electrical wire. Remove all non-metal components such as plastic or wood handles or wheels. Remove all glass. The following items are NOT recylable at the Community Recycling Centers:
  • Appliances such as washing machines, stoves, ovens, refrigerators or microwaves
  • Automobile parts: batteries tires, gas tanks, seats or non-metalics
  • Lawn mowers
  • Containers with residue of oils, grease, paints, latext, solvents, cleaners or any type of dangerous chemicals
  • Aerosol spray cans
  • Asbestos or materials containing asbestos
  • NO TANKS including compressed gas cylinders, sealed containers, helium tanks or propane tanks
  • Fluorescent light ballasts
  • Hot water heaters
  • Radioactive devices
  • Explosive devices
  • Any item that may contain CFCs
3 Styrofoam (tm) blocks Beaded blocks, as found in electronics packaging, all white, with no pigment or color, spotless, clean, new-looking. #6 expanded polystyrene only; no other numbers accepted Store in clean plastic bag No blocks with any smudges, cob webs, animal hairs, dirt, tape, labels or ink. No food or drink containers. Give recyclable blocks to staff. Discard dirty blocks at home.

Toner/Inkjet Cartridges Rechargeable toner/inkjet cartridges from printers or photocopiers When possible, keep in original packaging.
