What is EarthFest?

It’s you. Only greener. EarthFest 2009 features planet-friendly exhibitors and vendors to help you go greener. Organized into Five Green Villages, EarthFest will showcase the relative impact you can make with different greener choices through interactive displays, demonstrations and activities.

Learn all about recycling in this fast-paced game! Presented by Keep Kansas City Beautiful.

Fishing for Litter!
Kids have a blast fishing for litter! Using magnetic fishing poles, kids fish reusable, recyclable, and garbage material out of our “fishing pond” and learn about recycling by choosing the bins in which to dispose of their materials. By cleaning out the fishing pond, they learn how litter cleanup creates a cleaner environment and habitat for aquatic life. Presented by Keep Kansas City Beautiful.

Play Heartland Tree Alliance’s fun mulch relay game and get a free donut! And, Build a Tree: Learn the parts of a tree with our interactive game!

 

Greener Play

Calling all kids! Put on your imagination hats and get creative at the EarthFest kids tent.
In this tent you can:

  • Decorate a quilt block! Help StoneLion Puppet Theatre create a larger-than-life picnic blanket for use at The Picnic For The Planet.
  • Make your own noisemaker and puppet with StoneLion Puppet Theatre and dance a giant puppet parade at 3:30 PM.
  • Help construct a giant recycled art sculpture with Wonderscope Children’s Museum of Kansas City.
  • Other activities with Wonderscope include making newspaper hats, playing with beads, Legos and more!
  • Get your face painted! Free compliments of The Magic Brush.

Workshops and Presentations

11:00 AM - How to Eat Local in KC. How can you reach out to your community while at the same time finding local, sustainable methods for buying, making, and growing your own food? Come learn and share information about the exploding number of Kansas City's local and organic farmers' markets, CSAs, community and school gardening, preserving and other local-food efforts promoted by some fantastic organizations actively involved in our local "foodshed." As you grow more inspired, you can find out how to help your friends and neighbors "go local"! Hosted by Season Burnett, Director of the Kansas City CSA Coalition, and Emily Akins, member of the Kansas City Food Circle Coordinating Committee.

11:30 AM - Man Alive, How We Do Drive! For America to achieve energy independence (and clean air), we must adopt creative transportation technologies now. Learn about current and future electric cars.

12:00 PM - Imagine KC: Conversation in a Box

12:30 PM - Five Green Things. Discover which “green” activities make the greatest difference.

1:00 PM - Postcards to the Future. Hey Kids! How would you design Kansas City's future bus, bike and road systems? Write your own postcard to the future. For kids of all ages.

1:30 PM - Recycling 101. Learn how to recycle up to 80 percent of your trash here in the KC metro area. Get the latest scoop on recycling computers, old paint, plastics and glass. The Q&A session will give you a chance to find out exactly what you need to know.

2:00 PM - Economical Driving. Can't buy a hybrid right now? This presentation will explain how to drive and maintain your current vehicle in a manner that will minimize your carbon impact– and help you save money.

2:30 PM - Rain Barrel Workshop. Build your own rain barrel! Limited space available. Sign up at BTG/Info tent prior to the workshop.

Food and Beverage

This is a bottled water-free event! Bring your own reusable water container. We’ll supply the water – free!

Enjoy local and sustainable fare with blue bird bistro and Local Burger. Enjoy a local brew with Boulevard Brewing Company and support a good cause with lemonade at the Sierra Club’s Lemonade Stand.

Help us compost! Composting stations will be set up near all trash cans and recycling receptacles. Please help us have a green event by properly disposing of compostable waste. Thanks to Missouri Organic Recycling for making this possible!

Parking and Map

For Cars:

  • Off-street parking is available in and around the Country Club Plaza area.
  • Parking is available in the multi-level units on the UMKC campus at Oak and Rockhill. Please do not park in spaces marked “FS24/7”
  • Limited parking is available in the Midwest Research Institute parking lot via the entrances on Oak (south of Volker Blvd.)
  • Limited off-street parking is available on Oak Street between Emanuel Cleaver and Volker boulevards.

Please no parking in Kauffman Foundation or Kauffman Gardens parking lots.
Only Handicap-Accessible Parking is Available in the Kauffman Garden parking lot.

For Bikes:

  • Free bike parking will be available at EarthFest near the southeast corner of Theis Park. Don’t forget your bike lock!

For Bus Riders:

  • Find the closest Metro route or plan your trip at www.kcata.org

We recommend you enter Theis Park from the south ends at Oak and Volker or Volker and Rockhill.
