What is Clean Commute?

UMKC Clean Commute challenges students, staff, and faculty to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips to and from campus by using alternative modes of transportation such as bicycles, walking, and mass transit. Modeled on successful programs across the country the UMKC Clean Commute program will incorporate alternative transportation education while focusing on a campus-wide bicycle loan program.

Who can borrow a Clean Commute bike?

All UMKC students, staff, and faculty may apply for the loan of a bicycle on a first come-first serve basis.

How do I borrow a bicycle?

What are my obligations?

Should you be eligible for a bike loan you will need to sign a waiver and abide by the membership guidelines. In addition we request that you volunteer for a total of five hours with UMKC Clean Commute over the course of the semester.

What kind of bike is available?

50 new Jamis & Redline hybrid-style bikes complete with combination lock and front and rear lights are available for loan.

How long can I keep the bike?

Bike loans are for one semester.

How much does it cost?

While the bike loan is at no cost a security deposit in the form of credit card information is required to participate in the program. Should the bicycle, plus included accessories, not be returned in fair condition your credit card will be charged an amount equal to the value of the bicycle.

Where do I pick up my bike?

The Hub is UMKC’s new bike station located at 5301 Charlotte. Hours of operation follow the UMKC academic schedule: Monday 1:00-6:00 PM and Friday 8:30 -11:30 AM.

What if I get a flat?

The Hub provides a mechanic to maintain all UMKC Clean Commute loaner bikes. Should your bike need repairing bring it in at no cost to you.

Who else can use the Hub?

Any UMKC students, staff, or faculty may visit the Hub to get a non-loner bike repaired, volunteer, or learn more about alternative transportation options around Kansas City. See here for a list of services provided.

Can I ride my bike on campus?

Where can I take my bike?

You may take your bike on or off campus as you choose.
