How To Assemble A Rain Barrel

The following directions serve as a guideline for building your own ready to use rain barrel. For more information on the benefits of rain barrels, to buy barrels and kits, or to find rain barrel workshop dates return to the main rain barrel page.

Parts: ¾ inch hose bibb (faucet)
1 ¼ inch nylon hose barb
1 ¼ inch sump pump hose, 6’ long
Durable plant basket, 9” round
Fiberglass window screen to
wrap outside basket
Bicycle tire tube elastic (or similar)
to tie fiberglass screen to basket

This picture also shows a small piece of tube to be used as a gasket for bibb if needed, but is not essential. Parts listed are meant to serve as a guideline. Your choice of parts may vary.

Tools: Electric Saw (for cutting
a hole in the top to hold the
basket and screen)
Drill 1 5/8 inch hole saw (for
hose barb)
1 inch hole saw (for hose bibb)

Please wear safety glasses
when operating power tools!

Make pattern of the widest circumference of the plant bucket.

Use drill with hole saw to make a “starter hole” inside of the pattern.

Using 1-5/8 inch hole saw, drill
hole at top of barrel. This hole is
for your overflow. The higher your overflow the more water you will
be able to capture.

Be mindful where you drill this hole in relation to the other cuts (see final picture for example of average barrel).

Using the one inch hole saw, cut
a hole near bottom of the barrel.

Be mindful where you drill this
hole in relation to the other cuts (see final picture for example of average barrel).

Using electric saw cut along
traced outline. A smaller saw
will allow for a more precise fit.
You may use a large file to smooth out any rough cuts.
This hole will mostly likely sit against your house.

Make sure bucket makes a nice seal with barrel to avoid leaves, bugs, etc. from entering barrel.

Wash barrel free of residue. You should not use barrels that held chemicals or toxins. Tie elastic around basket firmly. Tuck screen under elastic tautly. Your basket should look like this when finished. Use scissors to cut away excess screen.
Screw threaded end of hose barb
into barrel. Barrel should offer some resistance and will require effort to
attach straight and tightly.

Your finished barrel will look similar to this, but should be customized to your own home needs.
